Expressive Arts Therapy is the use of various art forms within the therapy session. The main focus being the act of expressing through creation.
Expressive Arts Therapy has been shown to be helpful for anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, emotional behavioural and social struggles, addictions, relationship challenges, and neurological struggles.
Art gives meaning to our experiences, ourselves, and the world around us. When we engage with the arts, we connect with our inner knowing, often finding the solutions to our own struggles. In the creative process we enter a limitless space to explore areas of our everyday lives where we feel stuck or restricted in. Over time, allowing for narrow ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving to be broadened.
The Expressive Arts include painting, drawing, sketching, clay work, collaging, music, poetry, storytelling, dance, drama, and more.
No previous art experience is needed. The therapeutic significance comes through the art-making process versus the final product.
DBT is used for those who struggle with intense emotions and have difficulty regulating them. DBT teaches ways to manage and cope with emotional stress in a healthy way and improve relationships with others.
DBT has been shown to be helpful for borderline personality disorder, anxiety, depression, mood disorders, eating disorders, self-harm, suicidal behaviors, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, post traumatic stress disorder, and addictions.
The main strategies used within DBT help to practice and develop skills in mindfulness, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and emotion regulation.
